OCS Strategic Plan

Dear Parents, Staff, and Community Members,

On June 27, 2022 the Olivet Community Schools Board of Education voted unanimously to approve the new 2022-2025 Olivet Community Schools Strategic Plan. This plan represents countless hours of work by a stakeholder group made up of parents, community members, students, teachers, staff, administrators, and Board of Education members.

As we move forward throughout the next few years, the OCS Strategic Plan will be a guiding force in our planning process. The strategic plan is a living document that will serve as our roadmap toward continuous improvement. The strategic plan contains revised mission and vision statements as well as three focus areas for the district. Each of the focus areas has goals, objectives, strategic actions and progress measures.

  • Instructional Improvement and Innovation

  • Social Emotional Support

  • Real World Learning/College & Career Readiness

Please take a few minutes to review our new strategic plan. Copies of the complete plan and a summary document have been provided in the links to the right. We look forward to working together with you over the next three years to implement this comprehensive plan. Thank you very much for your continued support of Olivet Community Schools!

Sincerely,
John W. Mertz
Superintendent

Plan Summary

School Threats

OCS has partnered with local agencies in developing policies and procedures for responding to threats. Olivet Community Schools has worked collaboratively with local law enforcement, Eaton County Emergency Management, Eaton RESA, and the Eaton County Prosecutor’s Office in the development of guidelines for responding to school threats.

  • Zero-Tolerance: It is our obligation as a school district to make sure our schools are safe for both students and staff. Olivet Community Schools takes all threats very seriously. OCS has a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to any threats directed at students, staff, school buildings, or the school district.

  • Guidelines: In an effort to address each threat of violence within the school community, the Eaton RESA and its member districts, including Olivet Community Schools, have established guidelines and procedures for schools to follow in addressing and evaluating threats or violence within schools throughout Eaton County. These guidelines are intended to assist schools, law enforcement, and the Eaton County Prosecutor's Office in evaluating threats.

  • Investigation: All threats are investigated. Each threat must be treated as a true and intentional threat, regardless of whether an individual was joking, did not mean to scare people, did not mean to actually carry it out, etc.

  • Threat Assessment: In responding to some situations, it may be necessary for the district to conduct a formal threat assessment. Threat assessments are conducted following the Eaton County School Threat Guidelines by a Threat Assessment Team which includes school personnel and local law enforcement. The purpose of the assessment is to gather enough information from all appropriate sources (staff members, parents, etc.) to make good decisions about how to intervene effectively to manage the situation or the student concerned.

All threats are considered true regardless of the intent and will be investigated by district personnel. It is very important that students understand the consequences of making threats directed towards other students, staff members, buildings, or the district. The threat assessment procedures mentioned above are a part of our ongoing commitment to make the safety of students and staff our top priority. We will keep you updated as we move forward with our school safety initiatives. Thank you very much for your support of Olivet Community Schools.
