Novel H1N1 Flu (Swine Flu) and You

What is novel H1N1 (swine flu)?

Novel H1N1 (referred to as “swine flu” early on) is a new influenza virus causing illness in people. This new virus was first detected in people in the United States in April 2009. This virus is spreading from person-to-person worldwide, probably in much the same way that regular seasonal influenza viruses spread. On June 11, 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) signaled that a pandemic of novel H1N1 flu was underway.

Prevention & Treatment

What can I do to protect myself from getting sick?
There is no vaccine available right now to protect against novel H1N1 virus.  However, a novel H1N1 vaccine is currently in production and may be ready for the public in the fall. As always, a vaccine will be available to protect against seasonal influenza. There are everyday actions that can help prevent the spread of germs that cause respiratory illnesses like influenza.

Take these everyday steps to protect your health:

• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based cleaners are also effective.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.
• Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
• If you are sick with flu-like illness, CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. (Your fever should be gone without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.)
• Keep away from others as much as possible to keep from making others sick.

Construction Around the District

School began on Tuesday, September 8, 2009. During the summer, we have been busy with construction, technology upgrades and many curriculum related activities preparing for our students to return.

Construction Update

At Fern Persons Elementary School many classrooms received an "over haul" with new flooring, additional cabinetry, and energy efficient lighting upgrades. With the addition of a new wing of classrooms at the back of the building, the playground and landscape behind FPE is dramatically different. Children will have the walking track, playground equipment, a sledding hill, and a grassy "amphitheater" area to read and play outdoors.

Olivet Middle School and High School some noticeably changes are the addition of a new cafeteria, a new stadium, and new FFA barn. The outdoor area  near the stadium will have a turn around "drop off" area and handicapped parking, with new lighting, ticket booth, fencing, landscaping, and much more to come. Inside, there has been many other projects like energy efficient improvements with new lighting in the high school gym and technology upgrades have been made across the school district, including the integration many laptops into classrooms. The elementary wing of OMS also received new lighting, new cabinetry, along with many classrooms in the complex receiving new carpeting.

With all the progress made we are hopeful to be using our new cafeteria sometime before the Christmas break. Our Athletic Complex is coming along nicely too. The turf and track have been laid, the bleachers are almost complete, and the ticket booth now has windows.  Soon the fencing and landscaping at the complex will be completed, along with fencing around the FFA barn.
